Interculturality Workshop 01

Saturday, 10 June 2023
10am - 2.30pm

Topic: Cultures and Diversities: the challenge of harmony for our times

In this workshop we explore and share some of the positive and fragmenting experiences that result from the meeting of different cultures and other aspects of human diversity. We are invited to begin reflecting on the understandings we have and the subsequent challenges that personally affect each one of us.

We will address the following questions:

  • What have we learned from past notions of “culture”, “race” and “ethnicity” and what are their contemporary understandings?
  • How have science and theology contributed to humanity’s “intercultural” understanding?
  • What is “interculturality” and how can we begin to make it a reality in our lives?

Objectives

These workshops on interculturality uphold the fundamental belief that no particular race, gender, age, or class is superior to any other. They deepen awareness of the personal attitudes, values and behaviours we possess so interpersonal conflict is reduced and we may develop greater intercultural sensitivity and a respectful appreciation of all God’s people.

We will:

  • examine past and present understandings of “culture” and associated concepts such as diversity, assimilation, systemic racism, vulnerability/power and white fragility
  • read and reflect on the interculturality-themed writings of Pope Francis: A Culture of Encounter, Fratelli tutti, and Let Us Dream
  • share our insights and responses to the theology and implications of intercultural living
  • discern together how our understanding of interculturality can make a practical difference to our daily living, especially in regards to racism and the marginalisation of minority groups.
